Voting for the 2026 Assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry saw strong participation on April 9, with people coming out in large numbers to cast their votes.
Kerala recorded around 78% voter turnout. The election in the state is mainly a contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The BJP-led alliance is also trying to gain more support.
Assam saw even higher turnout, crossing 85%. The BJP is aiming to stay in power, while opposition parties are trying to challenge it. The high turnout shows that voters are very interested in the election.
Puducherry recorded the highest turnout, close to 90%. The Union Territory is seeing a tough fight between the ruling alliance and opposition groups.
Polling in all three regions was held in a single phase and was mostly peaceful. There were only a few minor issues reported at some polling booths, but overall the process went smoothly.
Voters started arriving early in the morning, and voting continued steadily throughout the day. Many women, young voters, and first-time voters took part, which helped increase the turnout numbers.
Security was tight at polling stations to ensure free and fair elections. Officials monitored the process closely to avoid any problems.
These elections are important because they will decide the next governments in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. Counting of votes will take place on May 4, and the final results are expected the same day.
The results may also give an idea of political trends in the country ahead of future elections.
