India’s Census 2027 has started on a digital note, with over 5.7 lakh households already choosing to fill in their details online in the first phase.
For the first time, people are being given the option to complete census forms themselves through an online portal, instead of waiting for officials to visit their homes. This new self-enumeration feature is part of the government’s push to make the census faster and more convenient.
The first phase of the census, which began on April 1, focuses on collecting details about houses and living conditions. People using the online option can submit their information within a set time window, after which officials will visit homes to verify the data.
So far, the response has been encouraging. Officials say the number of households opting for the digital method shows that many people are comfortable using online services for important national exercises.
The self-enumeration option is currently available in selected states and Union Territories, including Karnataka, Goa, Odisha, Sikkim, Mizoram, and parts of Delhi, along with island regions like Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Once a household completes the form online, they receive a unique ID. This helps census officials quickly verify the details during their visit, making the process smoother and reducing paperwork.
Census 2027 is India’s first fully digital census and will be conducted in two phases. The aim is to improve accuracy, save time, and reduce manual work by using technology.
Officials have urged more people to use the online option in the coming days. If participation continues to grow, this digital approach could change how future censuses are carried out in the country.
