India condemns Trump “hellhole” remarks

MEA calls comments “uninformed” and “in poor taste” after Trump reposts controversial immigration remarks

India has strongly criticised remarks linked to US President Donald Trump after he reposted a social media message that referred to India and China in derogatory terms during a debate on American immigration policy. The controversy has also drawn a sharp response from Iran, which defended both Asian nations as “cradles of civilisation.”

The row began after Trump reshared comments made by conservative commentator Michael Savage on birthright citizenship in the United States. In the post, Savage argued against current citizenship laws and used offensive language while referring to countries including India and China. Trump reportedly shared the transcript and video on his Truth Social platform, triggering backlash.

Responding to the issue, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the remarks were “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal added that such comments do not reflect the reality of India-US relations, which are based on mutual respect and shared interests.

The US Embassy in New Delhi later sought to contain the fallout by highlighting Trump’s earlier positive comments about India and reaffirming the importance of bilateral ties.

Iran also entered the controversy through statements from its diplomatic missions in India. Iran’s Consulate in Hyderabad said India and China are among the world’s oldest civilisations and criticised the remarks strongly. Another Iranian post invited Trump to visit India for what it called a “cultural detox.”

The comments have sparked political reactions in India as well, with opposition leaders urging the government to raise the matter strongly with Washington.
