Former Chief Economic Adviser Ashok Lahiri is set to become the Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, India’s apex policy think tank, while noted scientist Gobardhan Das will join as a member. The appointments were confirmed through government sources and reported by multiple media outlets.
Lahiri, a senior economist and former member of the 15th Finance Commission, will take over the second-highest position in NITI Aayog. He is known for his long career in public finance, economic policy, and academic work, including stints in government and international institutions. He has also served as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Gobardhan Das, currently the Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal, has been appointed as a member of the think tank. He is a scientist with expertise in molecular medicine and has previously worked at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he headed the Special Centre for Molecular Medicine.
According to reports, both appointments are expected to bring strong academic and policy experience into NITI Aayog. The think tank plays a key role in shaping India’s long-term development strategy and advising the government on economic and social policies.
Lahiri’s appointment comes as part of a broader leadership reshuffle in the institution. Officials said his experience in economic policy and fiscal management will strengthen the organisation’s policy direction at a time when India is focusing on growth, reforms, and global economic challenges.
Das’s inclusion is seen as an effort to bring more scientific and research-driven thinking into policy-making, especially in areas linked to health, biotechnology, and innovation.
