Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked security agencies to reduce the size of his official convoy and increase the use of electric vehicles as part of a broader effort to promote fuel conservation and cut unnecessary government spending.
Officials said the Prime Minister directed the Special Protection Group (SPG) to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy by nearly 50%. The changes have already been introduced during some of his recent visits.
The move comes at a time when India is dealing with rising crude oil prices and growing concerns over the economic impact of tensions in West Asia. Longer travel routes, increasing fuel costs and pressure on foreign exchange reserves have pushed the government to focus more on savings and efficient energy use.
Sources said Modi also encouraged officials to use electric vehicles already available within government fleets instead of adding new fuel-based vehicles. However, security arrangements and emergency protocols for the Prime Minister will continue without compromise.
The decision is being viewed as a symbolic message from the government on reducing wasteful spending and promoting responsible fuel consumption. In recent public speeches, Modi has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary expenses and adopt more cautious spending habits during uncertain global conditions.
Following the Prime Minister’s direction, several BJP-led states and government departments are also expected to review official convoy sizes and fuel usage. Some ministers and senior officials have reportedly already started reducing the number of escort vehicles during public events and official travel.
