The Congress on Thursday officially named senior leader V.D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, ending nearly 10 days of uncertainty and intense internal discussions over who would lead the new United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
The announcement came after several rounds of meetings and consultations held by the Congress high command in New Delhi following the party-led alliance’s massive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections. Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, were involved in the final decision-making process.
The UDF secured a sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections by winning 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly. The result marked a major political comeback for the Congress-led alliance and ended the Left Democratic Front’s decade-long rule in the state.
Although Satheesan had emerged as the frontrunner soon after the election results, the Congress leadership took additional time to arrive at a consensus. Senior leaders such as Ramesh Chennithala and K.C. Venugopal were also considered during the discussions. The delay had triggered speculation over possible factional differences within the party.
Party observers appointed by the Congress leadership met newly elected UDF legislators before the final announcement. The legislators reportedly backed Satheesan’s leadership, strengthening his position in the race for the top post.
Soon after the decision was announced, Congress leaders publicly expressed support for Satheesan. K.C. Venugopal said the party would work together under the new Chief Minister to ensure a stable and effective government in Kerala. Other senior leaders also congratulated Satheesan and called for unity within the party.
A six-time MLA from Paravur, Satheesan has been one of the most prominent Congress faces in Kerala politics over the last several years. He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly and led the UDF campaign aggressively against the ruling LDF government. His speeches inside and outside the Assembly, along with his focus on corruption allegations and governance issues, helped strengthen the opposition campaign ahead of the elections.
Political observers believe Satheesan’s elevation signals the Congress party’s attempt to project a younger and more aggressive leadership in Kerala. At 61, he is seen as a leader capable of balancing organisational control and public outreach while also maintaining unity among different groups within the state Congress.
