The Delhi government has announced that its employees will work from home for two days every week as part of new cost-cutting measures. The government has also stopped most foreign trips by officials for the next one year.
Officials said the decision was taken because of rising global uncertainty and increasing fuel prices linked to tensions in West Asia. The government believes the move will help reduce travel, fuel and office-related expenses.
Under the new plan, departments have been asked to allow employees to work remotely twice a week wherever possible. Government offices will also be encouraged to hold more online meetings instead of physical gatherings.
The Delhi government has additionally restricted foreign travel for officials unless the visit is extremely important and receives special approval. Authorities said only essential trips related to government work will be allowed.
Officials explained that rising crude oil prices and increasing operational costs have forced governments to look for ways to save money. Fuel prices in India were recently increased after global crude oil markets became unstable due to tensions involving Iran.
The work-from-home arrangement has received mixed reactions. Some employees welcomed the move, saying it would reduce daily travel stress and save commuting costs. Others said certain departments may face difficulties because many government tasks require physical presence and field visits.
Political reactions also followed the announcement, with some opposition leaders questioning whether the measures reflected concerns about the economy and rising inflation.
