Assam assembly approves uniform Civil Code Bill

State becomes third in India to adopt UCC legislation

The Assam Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, making Assam the third state in the country to adopt such legislation after Uttarakhand and Gujarat. The bill was passed after discussions in the state assembly, with the ruling government describing it as a step towards ensuring equal civil laws for all citizens.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the new law aims to bring uniformity in matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, regardless of religion or community. According to the government, the legislation is intended to promote equality and simplify civil laws across the state.

However, opposition parties strongly criticised the move, alleging that the legislation could affect the cultural and religious rights of minority communities. Some opposition leaders argued that personal laws are closely linked to religious practices and traditions, and any changes should involve wider consultation.

Despite criticism, the ruling BJP government defended the bill, saying the UCC is part of its long-standing commitment to creating a common legal framework for all citizens. Supporters of the law believe it could improve gender justice and legal clarity in civil matters.

The Assam government stated that the bill would help ensure equal rights, especially for women, by removing legal differences that currently exist under separate personal laws followed by different religious communities.
