The US House of Representatives has advanced a major bill that would provide additional assistance to Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia, bringing the legislation one step closer to final approval.
The measure cleared a key procedural hurdle in the House, setting up a final vote on the package. Lawmakers backing the bill said continued support is necessary to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian military aggression and maintain stability in Europe.
The proposed legislation includes billions of dollars in military, economic and humanitarian assistance for Ukraine. The funding is intended to help Kyiv sustain its defence operations, support government services and assist civilians affected by the conflict, which has continued for more than four years.
In addition to aid for Ukraine, the bill contains new sanctions targeting Russia. The measures are aimed at increasing economic pressure on Moscow by restricting access to financial resources and limiting activities linked to Russia’s defence and energy sectors. Supporters argue that stronger sanctions are needed to weaken Russia’s ability to continue the war.
The proposal received backing from lawmakers in both major political parties, although some members expressed concerns about the cost of additional foreign aid. Despite these objections, congressional leaders said the legislation reflects America’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and its allies.
Ukrainian officials welcomed the development, describing it as an important signal of continued US support. Kyiv has repeatedly emphasized that international assistance remains critical for its military operations and economic recovery.
