Alexander Zverev captured the first Grand Slam title of his career on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a hard-fought French Open final at Roland-Garros.
The German won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in a match that lasted more than four hours. After making a dominant start, Zverev was repeatedly challenged by Cobolli, who was playing in his first Grand Slam final and showed remarkable resilience throughout the contest.
Zverev took the opening set comfortably before Cobolli fought back to level the match. The German regained the advantage in the third set, but Cobolli forced a deciding set by winning a tense fourth-set tiebreak.
With the championship on the line, Zverev relied on his experience to take control of the fifth set. He broke Cobolli early and maintained his momentum to secure a memorable victory on the clay courts of Paris.
The triumph ends years of frustration for the 29-year-old, who had lost his previous three Grand Slam finals. It also marks a significant milestone in a career that already includes an Olympic gold medal and multiple ATP Finals titles.
For Cobolli, despite the defeat, the tournament represented a breakthrough performance. The Italian’s run to the final highlighted his growing status on the ATP Tour and suggested a promising future at the highest level of the sport.
Zverev’s victory finally places him among tennis’ Grand Slam champions and completes a long-awaited achievement in his career.
