India has launched Operation Amistad, a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission to support Venezuela after devastating earthquakes struck the country’s northern region. As one of the first nations to respond, India has dispatched medical personnel, emergency equipment and relief supplies to help people affected by the disaster.
Under the mission, two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft took off on June 26 carrying a 41-member medical team from the Indian Army’s elite 60 Para Field Hospital. The team includes doctors, surgeons, nurses and specialists trained to provide emergency treatment in disaster-hit areas. They are equipped to set up a fully functional field hospital capable of handling trauma cases, surgeries and critical medical care.
India has also sent a BHISHM Cube, a portable modular hospital system designed for rapid deployment during emergencies. Along with the medical unit, the aircraft are carrying more than 35 tonnes of relief material, including medicines, medical equipment, shelter supplies and other essential humanitarian aid needed for rescue and relief operations.
The operation follows the powerful earthquakes that caused widespread destruction in Venezuela, claiming hundreds of lives and injuring thousands more. Many families have been displaced, while hospitals and public infrastructure have suffered severe damage, creating an urgent need for international assistance. Rescue efforts continue as authorities search for survivors and provide relief to affected communities.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the mission reflects India’s long-standing commitment to supporting friendly nations during humanitarian emergencies. The name “Amistad,” which means “friendship” in Spanish, symbolises India’s solidarity with the people of Venezuela during this difficult period. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also confirmed the launch of the operation, highlighting India’s readiness to provide timely assistance wherever it is needed.
