US President Donald Trump has thanked India after a road near the US Consulate in Hyderabad was renamed Donald Trump Avenue. Calling it a rare honour, Trump said he was the first American president to receive such recognition in India. He shared photos and a video of the unveiling on his social media platform, Truth Social, and thanked India for the gesture.
The road, earlier known as US Consulate Road, is in Hyderabad’s Financial District at Nanakramguda. It is close to the US diplomatic mission and several major American companies, including Microsoft, Google and Amazon. The Telangana government renamed the stretch as part of the Freedom 250 celebrations marking 250 years of American Independence.
The plaque unveiling was attended by Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and senior US Consulate officials. They described the move as a symbolic gesture reflecting the growing ties between India and the United States, as well as Hyderabad’s rising importance as a hub for global business and technology.
Trump’s post quickly drew attention online. He said the naming made him the first US president to be honoured in this way in India, and described it as an “unprecedented honour.” The message added a fresh spotlight to the already close diplomatic and economic relationship between the two countries.
The renaming has also sparked political debate. The Telangana government said the decision reflects strong people-to-people ties and the city’s global outlook. But opposition leaders questioned the timing and the idea of naming a public road after a foreign leader. Supporters of the move argued that Hyderabad’s deep links with American firms and institutions make the honour fitting.
