Trump threatens tariffs over digital taxes

Tariff threat targets countries taxing American tech firms

US President Donald Trump has warned that countries imposing digital services taxes on American technology companies could face tariffs of up to 100% on their exports to the United States. The announcement marks a significant escalation in trade tensions and signals the administration’s determination to protect US-based digital firms from what it describes as unfair taxation.

Speaking at a White House event, Trump said countries targeting American technology giants through digital services taxes would face strong economic consequences. He argued that many of these taxes unfairly single out US companies while allowing local businesses to avoid similar financial burdens. According to the administration, such measures discriminate against American firms and hurt US economic interests.

Digital services taxes have been introduced or proposed by several countries, including Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and others. These taxes are generally aimed at large multinational technology companies that generate substantial revenue from online advertising, digital marketplaces and user data, even if they have limited physical operations in those countries.

The proposed tariff would apply to imports from any country that continues to enforce such taxes against US companies. Trump said his administration would use tariffs as a negotiating tool to encourage governments to withdraw or reconsider these measures. The White House believes this approach will create a more level playing field for American businesses operating overseas.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters argue that the move protects US innovation and prevents foreign governments from unfairly targeting successful American technology firms. Critics, however, warn that imposing steep tariffs could trigger retaliatory measures, increase costs for businesses and consumers, and further strain global trade relations at a time when economic uncertainty remains high.
