France heatwave to have claimed 1,000 lives

Record-breaking heat across Europe raises health concerns and climate change warnings for millions

France has recorded more than 1,000 excess deaths as an intense heatwave continues to grip Europe, making it one of the deadliest spells of extreme weather in recent years. Health authorities said soaring temperatures have taken a heavy toll, particularly on elderly people and those with existing medical conditions.

Large parts of France have experienced unusually high temperatures, with several regions recording well above seasonal averages. Hospitals have reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, while emergency services have remained on high alert to respond to people suffering from dehydration, heatstroke and other medical emergencies.

The extreme weather has not been limited to France. Several European countries, including Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany, have also faced record-breaking temperatures, prompting governments to issue health advisories and open cooling centres for vulnerable residents. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors during the hottest hours, drink plenty of water and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

Climate experts say the latest heatwave is another reminder of the growing impact of climate change. They warn that rising global temperatures are making heatwaves more frequent, longer-lasting and more intense, increasing risks to public health, agriculture and infrastructure.

The prolonged heat has also fuelled concerns over wildfires, water shortages and pressure on electricity supplies as demand for air conditioning continues to rise across the continent. Firefighters remain on standby in several regions where dry conditions have heightened the risk of forest fires.

French officials said the estimate of excess deaths is based on mortality data collected during the heatwave period and reflects the wider impact of extreme temperatures beyond direct heatstroke cases. Public health agencies continue to monitor the situation as temperatures remain above normal in several areas.
