India’s Women’s T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment after a six-wicket defeat to Australia at Lord’s, marking a second straight group-stage exit from the tournament. Chasing a place in the semi-finals, India posted a competitive 170/4 but could not stop Australia’s strong batting line-up from completing the record chase with an over to spare.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur led from the front with a blazing 56 off 27 balls, while Jemimah Rodrigues also made a useful contribution to lift India to a strong total. The bowlers gave India hope early on by reducing Australia to 68/3 and putting the favourites under pressure. But experienced batters Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner turned the match around with a match-winning partnership, guiding Australia to victory and ending India’s hopes.
After the defeat, head coach Amol Muzumdar said India must rethink its T20 approach if it wants to compete consistently with the world’s best teams. He said the batting showed positive intent throughout the tournament, but bowling and fielding remain the biggest areas for improvement. Muzumdar added that India’s young bowling attack needs more time and experience, while injured all-rounder Shreyanka Patil’s absence also affected the team’s balance.
Muzumdar backed Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership, saying she should continue as captain, though the final decision rests with the selectors. He stressed that India now needs to find the right combinations and build a clearer strategy for the shortest format.
The early exit has left players and fans heartbroken, especially after India’s promising start to the tournament. While the campaign ended sooner than expected, the team management believes the lessons learned will help build a stronger side for future ICC events.
