Bareilly on High Alert, Controversial Posters Spark Security Clampdown

Authorities impose internet shutdown and deploy extra forces ahead of Friday prayers to prevent communal unrest

With the internet shut down, streets wearing a deserted look, and heavy security presence on the ground, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh has been turned into a fortress as tensions mount ahead of Friday evening prayers in local mosques. This high alert mode is on by the officials after posters carrying the slogan “I Love Muhammad” sent ripples of tension, calling for immediate action. Security has been tightened across Bareilly and adjoining districts, with police and paramilitary forces stepping up deployment to prevent any flare-up.

Additional personnel, drones, and checkpoints have been pressed into service to monitor sensitive pockets. The precautionary measures have also been extended to four neighboring districts amid fears of unrest.

To check the spread of provocative messages and misinformation, authorities have suspended internet services, including broadband and SMS, across Bareilly and nearby regions for 48 hours. Officials said the shutdown was necessary to contain the situation and avoid further escalation.

Appealing for calm, police and district officials urged residents to cooperate with security forces. They assured that the beefed-up arrangements are aimed at ensuring peace during the congregational prayers and maintaining communal harmony in the tense atmosphere.
