Ebola spreads to 4th Congo province, deaths reach 600

Health teams intensify surveillance as suspected cases raise fears of wider outbreak nationwide

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing renewed concern after a suspected Ebola case was reported in a fourth province, raising fears that the outbreak could spread further. Health authorities are investigating the latest suspected infection while the reported death toll linked to the outbreak has climbed to 600.

According to health officials, the new suspected case has prompted an urgent public health response, with surveillance teams tracing contacts and monitoring people who may have been exposed to the virus. Samples have been collected for laboratory testing to confirm whether the latest case is Ebola.

The suspected spread into another province has heightened concerns because Ebola is a highly infectious disease that can spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people or contaminated materials. Rapid identification and isolation of patients remain critical to preventing wider transmission.

Authorities have intensified screening at health facilities and strengthened monitoring in affected regions. Medical teams are also working with local communities to raise awareness about Ebola symptoms, encourage early reporting of suspected cases and promote safe burial practices to reduce the risk of infection.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health partners are supporting Congo’s response by providing technical assistance, surveillance expertise and medical supplies. Vaccination efforts are also continuing in high-risk areas to protect frontline health workers and people who have come into contact with confirmed or suspected cases.

Officials cautioned that the reported death toll of 600 includes suspected and confirmed outbreak-related fatalities recorded during the ongoing health emergency. Investigations are continuing to verify cases and determine whether additional provinces have been affected.
