Devotion Turns to Distress, 36-Hr Curfew In Cuttack

CM Mohan Majhi calls for unity, orders top cop to monitor city as arrests begin

The ‘Silver City’, Cuttack, woke up to an apprehensive calm on Monday as its streets were deserted and mobile networks put to silence. This was the after-effect of overnight clashes during a Durga idol immersion. What began as a festive procession turned into hours of chaos and stone-pelting, leaving dozens injured and forcing authorities to clamp down with a 36-hour curfew and internet shutdown.

The trouble began when police stopped an unpermitted motorbike rally, triggering stone-pelting and chaos that injured about 25 people, including eight policemen.

The Odisha government acted quickly to bring things under control. A high-level security meeting was held, and police have been out in force, conducting flag marches to reassure residents and maintain order. Six arrests have been made so far under charges of instigating this violence.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi appealed to the people of Cuttack to stay calm and come together during this difficult time. “Our city has a proud history of harmony and peace,” he said. “We must not let a few disruptors disturb that spirit.” He also asked the top police official, DGP Y.B. Khurania, to stay on the ground and keep a close watch on the situation.

With the present situation of curfew and communication blackout put in action, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has called for a bandh, increasing public unease. Authorities have appealed to residents to remain indoors and cooperate with security forces as efforts to restore peace continue.
