HC seeks daily check on Sonam Wangchuk

Government doctor to monitor activist’s health as hunger strike enters 19th day

The Delhi High Court has directed the government to ensure regular medical monitoring of climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, whose indefinite hunger strike has entered its 19th day.

The court said that Wangchuk’s health is a matter of concern and asked authorities to arrange daily medical examinations by a government doctor. The direction came during a hearing where the court emphasised that every effort should be made to protect his well-being while respecting his right to express his views.

Wangchuk began his hunger strike in support of demands related to the future of Ladakh, including calls for stronger constitutional safeguards, environmental protection and greater representation for the Union Territory. His protest has drawn attention from supporters, environmental groups and civil society members.

During the hearing, the court observed that life and health are precious and that medical supervision is necessary, especially as prolonged fasting can lead to serious health complications. The court’s order aims to ensure that any deterioration in Wangchuk’s condition is identified early and appropriate action can be taken.

Wangchuk, known for his work in education and sustainability, has been advocating for measures to protect Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and address concerns raised by local communities. His campaign has focused on issues including protection of land, environment and cultural identity in the Himalayan region.

The administration has been monitoring the situation as the protest continues, while discussions around Wangchuk’s demands remain ongoing. Supporters have urged authorities to engage in dialogue and find a resolution.
