PM Modi Unveils India’s First Smart Airport in Navi Mumbai

Adani’s digital-first approach brings smoother, stress-free flying with innovative passenger-friendly features in the airport

Taking the best leap from vision to reality, Navi Mumbai International Airport(NMIA) is ready to change the way India flies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled NMIA- India’s First Fully Digital Airport today, 8 October, promising faster connections and a smart, stress-free travel experience for millions. This ₹19,650-crore project is developed by Adani Airports Holdings Ltd., NMIA, and is expected to open for commercial flights in December 2025.

It promises to ease crowding at Mumbai’s overburdened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and position the city alongside global hubs like London, New York, and Tokyo that operate multiple international airports. IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air are among the first carriers set to operate from NMIA. Initially serving domestic and select international routes, the airport is planned to evolve into a major transit hub. Located near Panvel, it benefits from direct links to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, offering faster access from Mumbai and Pune.

As this will be the first ‘Smart Air Hub’ in India, Passengers can experience smoother and smarter air travel, with a focus on convenience right from booking to baggage claim. Officials say travellers can look forward to pre-booked parking slots, online baggage drop scheduling, advance immigration processing, and real-time baggage location alerts. “We’re aiming to set a new benchmark in aviation. This isn’t just an airport, it’s an experience,” said Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports, describing the new facility as an “anxiety-free” gateway.

This project was conceived nearly two decades ago, and the airport had faced multiple delays due to land acquisition and environmental challenges. Its completion comes at a time when India’s air passenger traffic is projected to double over the next decade, making additional capacity crucial. Located near Panvel in Navi Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Airport is connected to major road networks, including the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), promising faster access for travellers from both Mumbai and Pune.

Phase 1 is just the beginning.  NMIA is planned to expand to four terminals capable of handling over 60 million passengers annually. For India, this launch marks a stride toward becoming a global aviation powerhouse, with world-class digital technology and with Navi Mumbai serving as a symbol of next-generation travel.
