US President Donald Trump has warned that New York City would face an “economic and social disaster” if Democratic Socialist legislator Zohran Mamdani wins the upcoming mayoral election.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Mamdani of being a “communist” and claimed his leadership would devastate the city’s economy. He urged voters to back former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, calling him “a bad Democrat, but better than a communist with no experience.”
Trump further said that if Mamdani becomes mayor, federal funding to New York would be cut to the minimum allowed by law.
Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member of Indian-Ugandan origin, has been leading the polls ahead of Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. His campaign, grounded in progressive housing and welfare reforms, has drawn support from young voters and left-leaning groups.
Despite his vocal criticism, Trump’s influence in New York politics remains limited. The former president, who hails from Queens, lost heavily in the city in both his presidential runs.
The New York mayoral race, now increasingly defined by ideological fault lines, has drawn national attention as Trump’s comments add a new political flashpoint ahead of polling day.
