Typhoon Kalmaegi Kills 114, Heads to Vietnam

State of emergency declared as millions affected and storm strengthens over the South China Sea

Typhoon Kalmaegi, locally called “Tino” has caused severe damage in the Philippines and is now moving toward Vietnam.

At least 114 people have died and 127 are missing, mostly in Cebu province. Floods and strong winds destroyed homes, cars, and roads. Around 2 million people have been affected, and over 560,000 have been displaced, with 450,000 sheltered in temporary relief centers.

The Philippine government has declared a state of national calamity to release emergency funds quickly and control prices on food and essentials.

The typhoon has moved into the South China Sea and is gaining strength. Vietnamese authorities are evacuating around 350,000 people in central provinces and are preparing for heavy rain, strong winds, flooding, and storm surges.

Officials warn that clearing debris and providing relief in the Philippines remains a challenge, and the storm could cause major damage in Vietnam in the coming days.

The Philippines is also monitoring a new tropical system that may develop into a strong storm next week, especially affecting northern Luzon.
