India has made its new airbase at Nyoma in eastern Ladakh fully operational, strengthening its military presence near the border with China.
The base is located at 13,700 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest military airbases in the world. It is only about 35 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), giving India a strategic advantage in the region.
The ₹230 crore upgrade includes a 2.7 km runway that can support both fighter jets and heavy transport aircraft, new hangars, air traffic control facilities, and housing for personnel.
Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh inaugurated the base by landing a C‑130J transport aircraft. The base will help move troops, supplies, and equipment quickly to forward areas like Pangong Tso, Demchok, and Depsang, where tensions with China have been high.
Officials said the base will also be ready for fighter operations by early 2026, though the extreme altitude poses some challenges. The development comes as both India and China continue to strengthen infrastructure along the border.
