A devastating fire broke out at a popular nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, late on Saturday night, killing 25 people and injuring several others. The tragedy unfolded in a matter of minutes, turning a festive gathering into one of the deadliest nightclub disasters the state has seen.
The fire started around 11:40 pm inside the club, when electric firecrackers or indoor pyrotechnics were allegedly used during a performance. According to preliminary information shared by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, sparks from these devices likely ignited flammable material in the club’s interior, including decorative panels and wooden fittings. The flames spread rapidly, producing thick smoke that filled enclosed areas.
At the time of the incident, over 100 people were believed to be inside the venue. Panic set in as visibility dropped and people rushed toward exits. Many victims were found trapped in the kitchen and basement areas, where ventilation was poor and escape routes were limited. Post-mortem findings indicated that most of the deceased died due to suffocation rather than burn injuries.
Of the 25 victims, 20 were club staff members and five were tourists. Four of the tourists were from Delhi and one was from Karnataka. Authorities have released the full list of the deceased after identification by families.
Investigations have revealed serious safety violations. The nightclub reportedly did not have a valid Fire Department No Objection Certificate (NOC) and was operating without mandatory safety clearances. The venue was located at the end of a narrow approach road and bridge, which delayed the arrival of fire tenders by forcing them to stop nearly 400 metres away.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine responsibility. Police have arrested several key staff members, including the general manager, gate manager and bar manager. Cases have also been registered against the owners and event organisers for negligence and violation of safety norms. Additionally, three local government officials have been suspended for alleged failure to enforce regulations.
The Goa government has announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who died and ₹50,000 for those injured. The incident has triggered a statewide review of safety standards in nightclubs and crowded public venues, with authorities promising strict action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
