Morocco building collapse in Fez kills 22

Two residential buildings fell in the historic city of Fez, leaving many dead and injured

A major tragedy struck the city of Fez in Morocco when two four-storey residential buildings collapsed in the Al-Mustaqbal neighbourhood. The incident happened late at night and has so far claimed the lives of at least 22 people. Another 16 people were injured, and many of them remain in hospital. Rescue teams are still searching the debris for anyone who may be trapped.

The two buildings stood next to each other and housed eight families in total. One of the structures was unoccupied at the time of the collapse, but the other had several people inside because a family was hosting a celebration to welcome a newborn child. Many of the victims were attending this gathering when the building suddenly gave way.

Officials say the current death toll may change as rescue efforts continue. Emergency workers have been using heavy machinery along with manual tools to lift broken concrete, clear rubble and create safe paths for search teams. Roads around the site have been temporarily blocked to allow smooth movement of rescuers and equipment. Nearby residents have been evacuated as a precaution.

People living in the area reported hearing loud cracking noises shortly before the collapse. Some said they had earlier noticed cracks and weaknesses in the buildings, though authorities have not confirmed any structural warnings. A formal investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse. Engineers are expected to examine whether the incident was linked to poor construction quality, ageing infrastructure or lack of maintenance.

The accident has shocked the city of Fez, a historic urban centre known for its ancient markets, cultural sites and densely populated neighbourhoods. This is not the first time building safety has come under question in the region, and the latest incident is expected to prompt a closer look at enforcement of construction and housing regulations.

Local leaders have expressed their condolences to affected families and promised full support, including temporary shelter and medical assistance. As day breaks, rescue workers continue their search in hopes of finding survivors while authorities work to account for all families who lived in the collapsed buildings.
