Tamil Nadu politics witnessed a major twist on Tuesday after a rebel faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam announced support for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government.
Several senior AIADMK leaders and MLAs reportedly backed Vijay ahead of the expected trust vote in the Assembly, deepening the internal crisis within the opposition party. The move comes soon after the Assembly election results, which saw the AIADMK struggle to perform strongly.
Rebel leaders said their decision was taken to ensure political stability in the state and respect the public mandate. Sources said many within the party were unhappy with the current leadership and the way the elections were handled.
The rebellion has increased pressure on AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, with reports suggesting that differences within the party had been growing for several months. Political observers believe the latest development could trigger a larger split if tensions continue to rise.
The support from rebel MLAs is expected to strengthen Vijay’s position in the Assembly and improve the numbers for the newly formed TVK government. Vijay’s party had emerged as one of the strongest forces in the elections, but post-poll political developments have continued to reshape alliances in the state.
The political shift has sparked intense discussions across Tamil Nadu, with many seeing it as a sign of changing power equations in state politics.
