Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s remarks on the India-Nepal border dispute have sparked political and diplomatic controversy in Nepal, with leaders and analysts warning that such statements could affect bilateral ties.
Shah said border encroachment was not one-sided and claimed that both Nepal and India had occupied each other’s territory at different times. He also suggested that the United Kingdom could help resolve the dispute, citing its historical role in defining regional boundaries.
His comments drew attention in both countries. Several Nepali political leaders criticised the remarks, saying border matters fall under the federal government’s authority and should be addressed through diplomatic channels. Critics argued that the statements could complicate a sensitive issue that has traditionally been handled through dialogue.
The India-Nepal border dispute mainly involves the Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura regions. Tensions increased after both countries issued maps showing their respective territorial claims. However, New Delhi and Kathmandu have consistently maintained that the issue should be resolved peacefully through talks.
Observers noted that Shah’s remarks gained attention because of his public profile, but stressed that they do not reflect Nepal’s official foreign policy.
The comments also triggered debate on social media. While some supported wider discussion on border concerns, others opposed the idea of involving a third country in a matter usually handled bilaterally.
Nepal’s government has not signalled any change in its position and continues to favour diplomatic engagement with India to address outstanding border issues.
