The horrific tragedy of an 11-year-old girl, whose life was brutally cut short in West Bengal’s Baruipur, took a dramatic turn on Tuesday night. Prabhas Mondal, the prime suspect accused of phsically abusing and murdering the innocent child, was shot dead in a police encounter after an alleged escape attempt.
The nightmare began on July 4 when the young girl went missing, leaving her family desperate for answers. A day later, her body was found stuffed inside a sack in the Surjyapur Haat area, shattering the quiet community and igniting immense grief and outrage. The heart-wrenching loss prompted angry residents to take to the streets, demanding swift justice for the little girl. Amidst the chaos, a man was tragically lynched by a mob on mere suspicion, an act West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later condemned, confirming the lynched individual was entirely innocent.
Seeking to piece together the child’s final moments, a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed. Investigators found crucial CCTV footage showing Mondal with the victim shortly before she disappeared. However, because Mondal was consistently misleading officers and refusing to cooperate during interrogation, the police decided to take him to Surjyapur on Tuesday night to reconstruct the sequence of events.
According to senior police officials, the situation turned violent during the reconstruction exercise. Mondal allegedly snatched a firearm from a police officer and attempted to flee under the cover of darkness. Police claim he fired at them, forcing the team to retaliate in self-defence. Mondal sustained severe bullet injuries during the brief exchange of gunfire. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
While Mondal’s death marks the violent end of a prime suspect, the investigation into the horrific crime continues. For a grieving family and a deeply shaken community, the scar of losing an 11-year-old child remains heavy, as authorities vow to pursue full justice and hold all responsible parties accountable.
