Bhubaneswar KIIT University student suicide

Police investigate hostel incident; digital evidence and chats examined

In a heartbreaking incident at KIIT University, an 18-year-old first-year computer science student from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, was found dead in his hostel room late Sunday night. Preliminary reports suggest the death was by suicide, sparking concern among students and parents over student safety and mental health support.

The student’s mother has alleged that her son faced persistent harassment from a girl and her family, which may have contributed to his decision to end his life. Acting on her complaint, the Infocity Police Station in Bhubaneswar registered a case and began a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Authorities say the hostel room has been sealed, and the student’s mobile phone and laptop have been recovered. Police are examining all digital communications, including social media interactions and chat messages, to ascertain the events leading up to the tragedy.

The student was reportedly alone in his room when fellow residents returned around 10:30 pm and noticed that his door was locked. Repeated knocks went unanswered, prompting hostel staff to alert the police around 10:45 pm. Officers opened the room under official recording and found the student’s lifeless body.

KIIT University expressed deep sorrow over the incident and confirmed its full cooperation with the authorities. In a statement, the university acknowledged the concern this tragedy has caused and emphasized the need for a strong support system for students.

This is the third suicide reported at KIIT University this year, following the deaths of two international students earlier in February and May. These incidents have heightened scrutiny on the university’s mental health and grievance redressal mechanisms, with critics urging for enhanced counseling, better monitoring of student welfare, and swift action on harassment complaints.

As the investigation continues, police are focusing on digital evidence, witness statements, and any prior complaints to understand the full scope of events. Meanwhile, students, parents, and the academic community are calling for strengthened safety protocols, proactive emotional support for students, and mechanisms that prevent harassment or undue pressure on young learners.
