Botswana gives 8 cheetahs to India

President Draupadi Murmu receives cheetahs, boosting India’s Project Cheetah conservation efforts

India and Botswana took a big step in wildlife conservation on 13 November 2025. At Botswana’s Mokolodi Nature Reserve, President Droupadi Murmu witnessed a symbolic hand‑over of eight cheetahs by Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko.

The group included adult and young cheetahs, both male and female, from Botswana’s Kalahari region. Two of the animals were released into a quarantine facility as the first stage of the hand‑over.

These cheetahs will join India’s Project Cheetah, which aims to bring cheetahs back to their natural habitats in India, including Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. After completing quarantine, the animals will be flown to India.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of conservation and international cooperation. The hand‑over also reflects growing ties between India and Botswana in areas such as trade, agriculture, health, and renewable energy.

This event marks a significant step in restoring India’s cheetah population and promoting global wildlife conservation.
