Centre appoints five new judges to Supreme Court

Four High Court Chief Justices and a senior advocate elevated to the apex court

The Centre has notified the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium.

The new appointees are Karnataka High Court Chief Justice N.V. Anjaria, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice Atul Sreedharan, Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, and senior advocate V. Mohana.

The appointments were cleared by the President and formally notified by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice. The Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, had recommended their elevation to fill vacancies in the apex court.

A key highlight of the appointments is the elevation of V. Mohana directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court. Such appointments are uncommon and are made to bring experienced legal practitioners to the Bench. Her appointment also increases the representation of women judges in the Supreme Court.

The four Chief Justices bring years of judicial experience from various High Courts across the country. Their elevation is expected to strengthen the Supreme Court and help it deal with its growing workload more effectively.

The appointments come at a time when the apex court has been functioning with vacancies. Once the new judges take oath, the court’s strength will move closer to its sanctioned capacity.

The addition of five judges is expected to enhance the court’s efficiency and help reduce the backlog of pending cases while it continues to hear important constitutional and public interest matters.

Legal experts have welcomed the move, saying the appointments improve regional representation and add experienced voices to the country’s highest court.
