The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has intensified its investigation into an alleged signature forgery case by conducting searches at locations linked to senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. The developments have deepened the political turmoil within the ruling party ahead of a crucial phase in state politics.
CID teams carried out search operations at the Trinamool Congress office located within the Kalighat residence complex of Mamata Banerjee and at an office associated with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Camac Street in Kolkata. The searches were conducted as part of an investigation into allegations that signatures of several party MLAs were forged on a document submitted to the West Bengal Assembly.
The controversy stems from complaints by multiple TMC legislators who alleged that their signatures were used without authorisation on a letter submitted to the Assembly Secretariat. The document reportedly related to internal party matters and triggered demands for a detailed investigation into how it was prepared and submitted.
The probe has also brought Abhishek Banerjee under scrutiny. The Diamond Harbour MP has been issued multiple summons by the CID but has not appeared before investigators, citing prior commitments and legal challenges to the notices. He has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking relief and questioning the validity of the summons.
According to reports, a large CID team conducted an extensive search at the Kalighat premises, though the operation reportedly ended without any seizure of documents or materials. Investigators nevertheless continued their inquiries at other locations linked to the case.
The opposition has seized on the controversy, while TMC leaders have described the developments as politically motivated. The party maintains that it will cooperate with lawful investigations while challenging actions it considers unfair.
