Former India cricketer CD Gopinath passes away at 96

Last member of India’s first Test win remembered

Former India cricketer C D Gopinath has passed away at the age of 96, with the BCCI and cricket fraternity paying tribute to his contribution to Indian cricket.

Gopinath was part of India’s historic team that recorded its first-ever Test victory against England in 1952 in Chennai. He was the last surviving member of that landmark team, marking the end of a generation in Indian cricket.

He played eight Test matches for India between 1951 and 1960. Known for his calm batting style, he played a small but important role in the early years of India’s Test journey.

In the famous 1952 win, he scored 35 runs and contributed to a match that remains one of the most important moments in Indian cricket history.

After his playing career, Gopinath stayed connected to the game. He worked as a selector and team manager, helping in the development of Indian cricket off the field as well.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed deep sorrow over his death and remembered him as part of the foundation generation of Indian cricket.

Former players and fans also paid tribute, saying his passing marks the end of an important era that shaped the early identity of Indian cricket.
