India has emerged as the world’s second-most represented country in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, with 91 institutions, with the United States on top of the list. This milestone highlights India’s growing influence and expanding footprint in global higher education.
Leading the charge is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, ranked in the 201–250 band globally, continuing its legacy as the nation’s top-performing university. Although no Indian institution yet breaches the top 200, the steady climb in the rankings reflects promising progress in both research and teaching excellence.
Among private universities, the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) earned a distinguished spot in the 351–400 category, underscoring private sector growth. Jamia Millia Islamia and Shoolini University follow, ranked in the 401–500 range, demonstrating strong research output and academic quality.
Other notable Indian universities include Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education in the 501–600 bracket. A broader group, including IIT Indore, KIIT University, Lovely Professional University, Mahatma Gandhi University, and University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), features in the 501–800 band, signaling widespread advancement across the higher education landscape.
THE World University Rankings 2026 evaluated over 2,600 universities across 108 countries, based on 18 indicators such as teaching quality, research impact, international outlook, and industry partnerships.
Globally, the University of Oxford holds the top spot for the tenth year running, followed by MIT, Cambridge, and Princeton. While the US and UK dominate the elite ranks, India’s surge in representation marks a critical shift in the global academic order.
Education experts emphasize that while the rise in numbers is commendable, the next crucial step for India is enhancing quality through greater international collaboration, faculty capacity building, and innovation-driven research, to break into the global top tier.
Today, India’s expanded presence in the THE World University Rankings signals not just participation but the immense potential of its growing academic ecosystem.
