Instagram adds stricter teen content filters

Meta introduces age-based controls to limit harmful content exposure

Instagram has expanded its teen safety features, introducing stricter content controls for users under 18 across multiple countries, including India.

The new system automatically places teen accounts under higher safety settings. Content is filtered based on age, similar to “PG-13” ratings, limiting exposure to sensitive material such as violence, explicit language, or adult themes.

Teens will not be able to change these settings on their own. Any changes will require parental approval, giving families more control over what younger users can access.

The platform is also adding a “limited content” mode, which applies even tighter restrictions across feed, search, and recommendations.

Parent company Meta said the update is part of its ongoing efforts to improve online safety and respond to concerns about teen mental health.

The rollout reflects growing global pressure on tech companies to make social media safer for younger users while maintaining engagement.
