Justice Yashwant Varma resigns due to cash case

Resignation comes during impeachment process over alleged cash recovery case

Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma has resigned from his post while facing impeachment proceedings linked to the “cash-at-home” controversy.

The case began after a fire incident at his official residence, during which reports claimed that unaccounted cash was found on the premises. The incident triggered internal judicial inquiries and later moved into the formal impeachment process in Parliament.

An in-house committee was set up to examine the allegations, and its findings led to further scrutiny. Parliament then initiated proceedings to consider his removal under constitutional provisions for judges.

The Supreme Court did not intervene in the process, allowing the impeachment proceedings to continue. Meanwhile, a parliamentary panel was also reviewing the case.

Justice Varma has denied all allegations, stating that neither he nor his family had any involvement in storing cash at the residence. Despite his denial, the process continued and the matter gained wider attention.

His resignation comes at a time when the impeachment process had already gathered momentum. While resignation ends the immediate removal proceedings, the controversy and inquiry findings remain part of the official record.

The case has drawn attention due to its seriousness and the rare nature of impeachment proceedings against a sitting High Court judge. It also raises broader questions about accountability within the judiciary.
