NEET-UG re-exam on June 21 after paper leak

Centre plans to shift the medical entrance test to a computer-based format from next year

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination on June 21 following the controversy surrounding the alleged paper leak in the medical entrance test. The decision comes amid mounting concerns over the integrity of the examination process and growing pressure from students and parents across the country.

The original NEET-UG examination was conducted earlier this month for lakhs of medical aspirants. However, allegations soon surfaced that question papers had been leaked through online platforms and messaging groups before the examination began. Following preliminary findings and public criticism, authorities decided to cancel the examination and order a re-test.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the case and investigating the possible involvement of middlemen, coaching-linked operators and insiders connected to the leak. Several people have reportedly been questioned in connection with the investigation.

Amid the controversy, the Union Education Ministry announced major reforms aimed at improving transparency and strengthening exam security. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said NEET-UG would be conducted entirely in computer-based mode from next year to reduce the chances of malpractice and paper leaks.

Officials said the proposed changes would include stricter monitoring systems, stronger digital safeguards and better coordination with law enforcement agencies during examinations.

The issue has also triggered political reactions from several states. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and actor-politician Vijay criticised the NEET system and renewed demands for scrapping the examination. Vijay urged the Union government to abolish NEET and allow medical admissions based on Class 12 marks, arguing that the entrance test places excessive pressure on students and disadvantages rural and economically weaker candidates.

The cancellation of the examination has caused anxiety among lakhs of students preparing for medical admissions. Many candidates expressed frustration over having to reappear for the highly competitive test after months of preparation.

The NTA is expected to release revised admit cards and updated examination guidelines soon. Students have been advised to regularly check official notifications for further updates regarding the June 21 re-examination.
