Pakistan hosts US-Iran talks amid fragile ceasefire

High security in Islamabad as tensions remain over regional conflicts

Pakistan is preparing to host direct talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, in an effort to turn a fragile ceasefire into a more lasting peace arrangement.

The discussions come after weeks of conflict in the Middle East, which were temporarily paused through a short ceasefire agreement. Pakistan has played a mediating role in bringing both sides to the table and is now facilitating the negotiations.

The talks are expected to focus on key issues such as reducing military tensions, regional security, and the future of sensitive disputes including Iran’s nuclear programme. There is also concern over the stability of important global energy routes in the region.

Despite the diplomatic push, the situation remains tense. Ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East and mistrust between the US and Iran continue to raise doubts about how far the talks can progress.

Security in Islamabad has been tightened significantly ahead of the meetings, with authorities putting in place strict arrangements to ensure the safety of delegations.

For Pakistan, hosting the talks is also seen as an opportunity to play a more active diplomatic role in regional peace efforts. The country has been engaging with both sides in recent weeks to help keep the dialogue process alive.

Still, there is cautious hope that even limited progress could help reduce tensions and bring some stability to a region that has seen repeated flare-ups.
