Pakistan kills 29 militants along Afghanistan border

Cross-border tensions escalate after military operation

Pakistan’s military says it has killed 29 suspected militants during a major security operation along the country’s border with Afghanistan, highlighting the growing security challenges in the volatile frontier region.

According to the military, security forces intercepted a group of armed fighters attempting to cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan. Officials said the militants were engaged in an exchange of fire before being killed during the operation. Weapons, ammunition and explosives were reportedly recovered from the site.

The operation comes amid rising violence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where Islamabad has repeatedly accused militant groups of using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan. The Pakistani government has urged the Taliban-led administration in Kabul to prevent armed groups from operating across the border, allegations that Afghan authorities have consistently denied.

The latest military action follows a series of airstrikes and counterterrorism operations carried out by Pakistan in recent months. These operations have strained relations between the two neighbouring countries, with Kabul criticising Pakistan’s military actions and expressing concern over civilian casualties in previous cross-border incidents.

Pakistan maintains that its operations are aimed solely at eliminating militant threats and protecting its citizens. Officials say armed groups have stepped up attacks on security forces and civilians, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, making stronger border security a national priority.

Military officials added that surveillance and intelligence-based operations have been intensified to prevent further infiltration attempts. Additional troops have also been deployed in sensitive border areas to strengthen security.

The developments underscore the continuing instability along one of South Asia’s most sensitive borders. Analysts say the deteriorating security situation poses challenges not only for Pakistan and Afghanistan but also for regional stability, especially as militant violence has increased over the past year.
