Pentagon denies rift with Vatican amid Pope criticism

US says meeting was respectful despite reports of tensions over war remarks

The Pentagon has dismissed claims of a growing rift with the Vatican, saying its recent contacts with Church officials were “respectful” despite public criticism from the Pope over global conflicts.

Reports had suggested rising tension between the US defence establishment and the Vatican following comments by Pope Leo XIV, who has repeatedly called for an end to wars and criticised the use of military force in international disputes.

The controversy centres on an earlier meeting between US defence officials and a Vatican representative, where some reports claimed sharp exchanges took place over the Pope’s remarks on global military actions, including ongoing conflicts involving the United States and its allies.

However, the Pentagon has rejected descriptions of any “bitter clash,” saying the discussions were normal diplomatic engagement and that no hostility was expressed during the meeting.

US officials stressed that they maintain strong working relations with the Holy See and value continued dialogue, even when there are differences in opinion on international policy and military action.

The Vatican has not issued a detailed public response to the latest Pentagon statement, but earlier reports had suggested concern within Church circles about how its criticism of war and political leadership is being received in Washington.
