SC keeps Waqf registration deadline, directs Tribunal relief

6 December deadline stands and portal issues to be addressed via Waqf Tribunals

The Supreme Court of India has refused to extend the deadline for registering Waqf properties under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The six-month deadline will end on 6 December 2025.

Petitioners, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, had asked for more time. They said the digital UMEED portal started only in June and many older Waqf properties do not have complete documents. They also raised concerns about technical glitches and mandatory fields that are hard to fill for historic properties.

The Court said portal issues or missing documents are not a reason to extend the deadline for everyone. However, property-holders who face difficulties can apply to the Waqf Tribunal before 6 December. The Tribunal can provide individual relief if needed.

The Supreme Court made it clear that blanket extensions are not allowed. Anyone who cannot register through the portal must follow the legal process via the Waqf Tribunal.
