The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a CBI investigation into the death of Twisha Sharma, saying the allegations and circumstances surrounding the case required an independent and transparent probe.
The decision came during the hearing of petitions related to the case, which has drawn widespread attention in recent days. The court observed that the seriousness of the allegations made it necessary for an independent agency to examine the matter and ensure that the investigation remains free from any doubts.
Twisha, a young woman from Bhopal, died earlier this month under circumstances that led her family to allege dowry harassment and abuse after marriage. Family members have claimed she faced repeated mental and physical harassment and had raised concerns about her situation before her death. The allegations are being investigated, while the husband’s side has denied wrongdoing.
The development came shortly after Twisha’s final rites were performed in Bhopal. Her body was handed over to the family following a second post-mortem examination conducted by an AIIMS Delhi medical team. The cremation took place nearly 12 days after her death, with the family waiting for a fresh autopsy before proceeding with the last rites.
The family had earlier sought a second post-mortem, raising concerns over the findings of the initial examination and demanding a more detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. The request for another forensic examination had intensified public attention on the case.
During Monday’s hearing, the Supreme Court stressed the need for a fair and impartial process, stating that public confidence in the investigation was important. With the CBI now taking over the case, the agency is expected to review existing evidence, examine the findings of both post-mortem reports and conduct further inquiry if necessary.
The case has also reignited discussions around dowry-related harassment and the need for timely and transparent investigations in such cases.
