UDF leads, BJP makes historic gains in Kerala

Counting underway in 1,199 local bodies. NDA strong in Thiruvananthapuram

Kerala’s 2025 local body election results are taking shape as counting continues across 1,199 local bodies, including village panchayats, municipalities, and six municipal corporations. The elections are seen as a key indicator of public sentiment ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.

So far, the United Democratic Front (UDF) is leading in most areas. The alliance has secured a strong position in urban bodies, including Kochi Corporation, where it has crossed the majority mark. UDF is also ahead in several municipalities and gram panchayats across the state, showing that it remains the dominant political force in Kerala’s local governance.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is trailing in many urban areas but continues to maintain support in rural regions. Several gram panchayats and block panchayats still show LDF leads, indicating that the Left front remains competitive in Kerala’s countryside, even if it faces challenges in cities.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, has achieved a historic breakthrough in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, coming close to winning the majority for the first time in decades. The party’s candidates, including notable figures like former IPS officer R Sreelekha, have won key wards, signaling growing urban support. In other regions, NDA has pockets of leads but is behind UDF and LDF in overall numbers.

Early trends show a three-way contest: UDF leads in most urban and rural bodies, LDF remains strong in rural pockets, and NDA is emerging as a new contender in urban centers, particularly in the state capital.

The counting is ongoing, and the State Election Commission is updating results continuously. Analysts say these elections are an important test of voter mood ahead of next year’s assembly elections. The performance of the BJP in Thiruvananthapuram may reshape political dynamics, while UDF’s current lead strengthens its position across the state.

Overall, Kerala’s 2025 local body elections reflect a competitive political environment, with UDF leading, LDF holding rural ground, and NDA making significant urban gains, particularly in the state capital. Final results are expected to be declared by the end of the day.
