At least 20 people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Monday, officials said. The accident took place on a hilly stretch of road when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a sharp curve.
The bus was travelling through the Ramnagar area near Kagort village when it veered off the road and rolled down into a steep gorge. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle, trapping many passengers inside the wreckage.
Locals were among the first to reach the accident site and immediately began rescue efforts before emergency teams arrived. Police, along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, later joined the operation to pull out survivors and recover bodies from the damaged bus.
Injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Some of them are reported to be in critical condition, and officials have warned that the death toll may rise as rescue and medical operations continue.
The bus was reportedly carrying passengers along a routine route connecting rural areas to Udhampur town, a common travel path in the region. Such roads are often narrow, steep and prone to accidents, especially for heavy vehicles.
