More than 300 tourists stranded on the Gulmarg Gondola in Jammu and Kashmir were safely rescued after a technical issue disrupted operations and triggered panic among passengers.
The incident took place after a fault caused the gondola service to stop, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded for several hours. The sudden halt created anxiety among passengers, many of whom were suspended mid-air in cable cars while others remained stuck at stations waiting for the service to resume.
Rescue teams immediately launched a large-scale operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army. Officials worked together to safely evacuate stranded passengers and restore normalcy at the site.
Passengers who experienced the incident described moments of fear and uncertainty after the service stopped unexpectedly. Families with children and elderly visitors were among those stranded during the disruption.
According to reports, the rescue operation continued for around seven hours before all tourists were brought to safety. No injuries or casualties were reported during the incident. Necessary inspections and safety checks are expected before regular operations fully resume.
The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable car systems and a major tourist attraction in Kashmir, attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is particularly popular among tourists visiting the region for sightseeing and adventure activities.
Officials later confirmed that the stoppage was caused by a technical snag and said engineers and technical teams were assessing the issue.
