Trump ousts attorney general Pam Bondi

Deputy AG Todd Blanche named acting head amid Justice Department shake-up

US President Donald Trump has fired Pam Bondi from her position as United States Attorney General, announcing the move on social media. Trump praised Bondi as a “loyal friend” and “great patriot,” while indicating she would transition to a role in the private sector. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has been appointed acting attorney general.

Bondi’s tenure, which lasted around 14 months, was marked by alignment with Trump’s priorities but also controversy. Sources indicate the president was frustrated with her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, particularly the release of sensitive documents and what he viewed as insufficient action against political opponents.

During her time in office, Bondi worked to reshape the Justice Department to reflect Trump’s agenda, including prioritizing politically significant investigations. While praised by allies for loyalty, she faced criticism from Democrats and some conservatives, who argued that her approach threatened the department’s independence.

Trump did not provide specifics on Bondi’s next role but described it as “important” and suggested it would involve a smooth transition to the private sector. Bondi, in response, expressed gratitude for her service and reiterated her support for Trump’s broader goals.

The firing is part of a wider turnover in the Trump administration, following recent departures of senior officials including the Homeland Security Secretary. Blanche, who previously served as a personal lawyer to Trump, takes over during a period of heightened scrutiny of the Justice Department.
