A pre-dawn bomb attack in Bishnupur district, Manipur, on April 7, 2026, killed two children—a 5-year-old boy and his 5-month-old sister—and critically injured their mother. The explosion occurred at their home in Moirang Tronglaobi village. Authorities suspect the device, possibly a rocket-propelled explosive, was fired by militants, though no group has claimed responsibility. A total of 4 people have claimed to have died in the attacks.
The attack sparked outrage across the Imphal Valley, with angry residents blocking roads, staging protests, and storming a paramilitary camp. Security forces opened fire to control the crowd, resulting in at least two additional deaths and several injuries.
In response, the Manipur government imposed an indefinite curfew and suspended internet and mobile services across five districts: Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe into both the blast and the ensuing unrest.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the attack as brutal and senseless, visited the injured mother, and promised justice. Additional security forces have been deployed to stabilize the region.
The incident comes amid long-standing ethnic and political tensions in Manipur, particularly between valley and hill communities, which have previously led to violence and displacement. Authorities continue to investigate the attack and urge residents to stay indoors and follow official updates while emergency services assist affected families.
