Bangladesh FM in India to reset ties

Dr Khalilur Rahman’s visit aims to boost cooperation on trade, water, and energy

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman arrived in New Delhi on April 7 for a three‑day visit, marking the first high‑level engagement between India and Bangladesh since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) came to power earlier this year. Officials from both countries describe the visit as a step toward rebuilding trust and strengthening cooperation after a period of cooler relations.

During his stay, Dr Rahman is scheduled to meet top Indian leaders, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, to discuss a wide range of issues. The agenda includes trade, water‑sharing agreements, energy partnerships, border management, and visa processes.

A key focus is the Ganges water‑sharing treaty, which is set to expire later this year, as well as progress on the long‑pending Teesta river agreement. Energy cooperation is also on the table, particularly to help Bangladesh navigate ongoing fuel and electricity challenges amid global disruptions.

India’s officials have expressed optimism about the visit. The Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh highlighted the desire for a partnership that is “forward-looking and people-centric,” emphasizing collaboration in health, rural development, trade, and connectivity.

From Dhaka’s side, the visit is being seen as an opportunity to move beyond past tensions and establish a relationship with India based on mutual respect and dignity. Analysts say this diplomatic outreach could pave the way for further high-level meetings, including a potential visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The visit also has an eye on broader regional engagement, as Dr Rahman will later attend the Indian Ocean Conference in Mauritius, signaling Bangladesh’s intent to play a more active role in regional cooperation.
