Centre notifies Women’s Reservation Law 2023

33% quota for women in Lok Sabha and Assemblies takes legal effect

The Centre has officially brought the Women’s Reservation Law into force from April 16, marking an important step toward increasing women’s representation in Indian politics.

The law, passed in 2023 and widely known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. With the latest notification by the government, the law has now formally come into effect.

The move is being seen as a milestone for women’s political participation in India, where female representation in Parliament and state assemblies has remained relatively low for years.

Under the law, one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies will be reserved for women. The quota will also cover seats already reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, ensuring representation for women from these communities as well.

Although the law is now in force, the reservation is expected to be implemented only after the next delimitation exercise. Delimitation is the process of redrawing constituencies based on population data. This means the quota may be introduced in future elections after that process is completed.

The notification comes at a time when Parliament is also discussing related constitutional changes involving seat reorganisation and the future expansion of Lok Sabha seats.

Many also believe greater participation of women in politics can improve focus on issues such as education, healthcare, safety, and social welfare.

Political reactions have largely welcomed the step, though some opposition leaders have said the reservation should be implemented immediately rather than being linked to delimitation.

Supporters of the law say it has the potential to reshape Indian politics by bringing more women into leadership roles and making lawmaking bodies more representative.
