YouTube adds new control to disable shorts

Users can now block the Shorts feed using a zero-minute daily limit

YouTube has rolled out a new setting that gives users the option to disable Shorts, its popular short-video feature. The change comes as growing numbers of users seek better control over screen time and digital distractions.

The platform now allows users to set a zero-minute daily limit for Shorts. After the limit is enabled, the Shorts feed is restricted, helping users avoid constant short-video recommendations.

Previously, YouTube’s minimum limit started at 15 minutes, meaning users could only reduce usage rather than fully stop it. The new setting is seen as a practical step for those who want to focus on long-form content.

Users can activate the feature by opening the YouTube app, selecting Settings, then Time Management, and choosing 0 minutes under the Shorts feed limit option.

The update is currently available on mobile devices, including Android and iPhone, and may appear gradually for all users.

YouTube Shorts was launched to compete with TikTok and Instagram Reels, but many users have criticised short-form feeds for encouraging endless scrolling. The new feature is expected to be popular among viewers looking for a more controlled viewing experience.
